“GFMD light” scheduled for December 1-2 2011 in Geneva

Besides ten regional events announced so far for 2011, there are also plans for an  “extended Friends of the Forum” meeting at the end of the year that will replace the large-scale meetings of the previous GFMDs. The date is tentatively scheduled for December 1-2 in Geneva. Less information is known so far about the civil society component, but one important announcement has been made:

The civil society component in 2011 will be organized by the International Catholic Migration Mission (ICMC) whose Head of Policy, John Bingham, has been very involved not only in previous GFMD but also PGA meetings. The Swiss chair is envisaging some form of “common space” between government representatives and civil society, but as of yet has not been announced if there will be a fully fledged civil society meeting preceding the government event as has been the case in the previous GFMDs.

So, stay tuned; hopefully, I can make it to Geneva next week for the 100th International Labour Conference (ILC), where a GFMD 2011 Side Event organized by the ICMC is scheduled for Wednesday, June 8. Last year it was pretty informative regarding the Mexican GFMD, so the same should be true at the site of the upcoming events…
