Bad News on Good Friday: After 14 years in operation, the Brussels-based NGO December 18 announced today that the board members have decided to close down the organization. The reason for this decision is the lack of funding that is needed to run the organization on a professional basis. The Problems with funding started two years ago when the office in Brussels had to be closed and some contracts could not be renewed.
This is a big loss for the advocacy of migrants rights as human rights. Named after the date when the United Nations adopted the “International Convention on the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of their Families”, December 18 has been very active in promoting the ratification of the convention and International Migrants Day, which is is held at the same date. Many radio reports where released each December and offered for free redistributrion; also, in the past years December18 has reported extensively from the Global Forum on Migration and Development.
Although December18 has been very succesfull in raising awareness for its issues, still not a single major receiving Country of migrants has ratified the convention. Thus, its work would still be needed; hopefully, the members will find other venues to work for that cause.
