While the GFMD government meeting will start tomorrow, migrant organisations will gather for two events at the Brandenburg gate – one of them taking place in the morning of Wednesday 28 June, a second one in the evening. The first one is organized by the International Migrants’ Alliance (IMA) and Migrante Europe, the second one a “Prelude” to the GFMD Civil Society Days. This is the planned program:The first gathering is called “The Speak Out Street Event”, organized as part of the 7th International Assembly of Migrants and Refugees (IAMR) and will start at 9 am at the Brandenburg Gate. The goal is to “send a strong message to them [the GFMD participants] regarding the continued marginalization of frontline peoples and communities affected by forced migration and human trafficking”. It wants to “give space to the voices that challenge the legitimacy and capacity of the GFMD to effectively address the problems and respond adequately to the challenges of migration and development”. Expect speeches and cultural performances until about noon.
You can return to the Pariser Platz / Brandenburg Gate at 6 pm for the next event: Under the theme “Breaking down walls”, a prelude to the civil society component of the GFMD will take place. As the organizers, the GFMD Civil Society Coordinating Office, stresses, “where everybody is invited to share short poems, songs, stories, dances and much more”, so you do not have to be a delegate in order to participate. The scheduled duration is one hour, until 7 pm.
I will try to participate in both events and share impressions and pictures.
